Runaway bride: Wedding is postponed, not cancelled

I could careless but when the CNN spends time selling a story, they have an obligation to continue otherwise viewers might wake-up and notice the story was never news worthy.

See how pretty? How cute. Hear them talk? What darlings.

The slaves of power mind the cause they have to serve, because their own interest is concerned; but the friends of liberty always sacrifice their cause, which is only the cause of humanity, to their own spleen, vanity, and self-opinion.

Cheney Wants a Cage Match

Trash talking Dick Cheney calls out Reid (D-NV) for Cage match in the GOP's Summer Slam-fest 2005 aka "The Nuclear Option"

Vice President Dick Cheney warned Democrats Friday that he will cast the tie-breaking vote to ban filibusters of President Bush's judicial nominees if the Senate deadlocks on the question.

Spitting mad

spit
Spitter
A man spit tobacco juice into the face of Jane Fonda after waiting in line to have her sign her new memoir. Capt. Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City Police Department said Michael A. Smith, 54, was arrested Tuesday night on a municipal charge of disorderly conduct.

Smith, a Vietnam veteran, told The Kansas City Star Wednesday that Fonda was a "traitor" and that her protests against the Vietnam War were unforgivable. He said he doesn't chew tobacco but did so Tuesday solely to spit juice on the actress.

"I consider it a debt of honor," he told The Star for a story on its Web site. "She spit in our faces for 37 years. It was absolutely worth it. There are a lot of veterans who would love to do what I did."
Charge him.  Charge him since he intentionally planned to spit on her.  This was not an impulsive act or an act of passion.

He could have thrown a pie at her but he decided to spit which is a disgusting act.

Ignoranus

Setback
John R. Bolton's nomination as U.N. ambassador suffered an unexpected setback Tuesday when a Republican-controlled Senate committee scrapped plans for a vote in favor of a fresh look at allegations of unbecoming conduct. ...
... The tide turned when Ohio Republican Sen. George Voinovich spoke for the first time. He did not attend Bolton's two-day confirmation hearing last week but had been presumed to be a supporter.
``I don't feel comfortable voting today,'' Voinovich said.
... A Yale Law School graduate, Bolton has been a lawyer in private practice and an academic. He is considered one of Bush's most conservative advisers on foreign policy, and one of the most caustic.
It is written:
Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows, because the one who sows for his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit.
The neocons agenda and attitude are inseparable. The ends do not justify the means nor is raw power a justification of ones actions. Bolton shall reap what he has sown.

BoBo

Does Bobo like UN Ambassador Nominee Mr. Bolton? I think not, but he supports him - or at least he opposes those who oppose Bolton.

But it is ridiculous to say he [Bolton] doesn't believe in the United Nations. This is a canard spread by journalists who haven't bothered to read his stuff and by crafty politicians who aren't willing to say what the Bolton debate is really about.

Sometimes it takes sharp elbows to assert independence. But this is certain: We will never be so seduced by vapid pieties about global cooperation that we'll join a system that is both unworkable and undemocratic.
BoBo doesn't believe in the UN and kinda said so: "vapid pieties about global cooperation that we'll join a system that is both unworkable and undemocratic." but he thinks a nonexistent form of the UN is what better suits Bolton's style and views ... or does he?
I don't like John Bolton's management style. Nor am I a big fan of his foreign policy views. He doesn't really believe in using U.S. power to end genocide or promote democracy.
See BoBo doesn't like the Botlon either but he can't resist any chance to poke fun at "journalists" and like minded people who agree with BoBo that Bolton is not the right guy - bad management style and out-of-line foreign policy views - but Bolton critics are inferior to BoBo because they lack his cognitive dissonance.

I haven't a clue

The FBI and the inspectors general at the Interior and Energy departments are investigating the possibility of fraudulent work on the nuclear waste dump planned for 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The Interior Department cited the investigations in turning down Porter's request for the scientists' presence at a hearing set for next Wednesday.
"I don't have a clue when these programs were installed. So I've made up the dates and names. ... This is as good as it's going to get. If they need more proof, I will be happy to make up more stuff."
Hey Nick hasn't a clue either and he too is more than happy to make stuff up.

Green, glowing green

nick
Nick is nuts.

How to write: Lesson 117
Label yourself "Green" and then write pro nuclear power advocacy. Hint - don't study the topic or it will be too hard to end on an upbeat, pro nuclear conclusion.

Green, glowing green

What killed nuclear power in the past was cold economics. Major studies at M.I.T. and elsewhere show that nuclear power is still a bit more expensive than new coal or natural gas plants, but in the same ballpark if fossil fuel prices rise. And if a $200-per-ton tax was imposed on carbon emissions, nuclear energy would become cheaper than coal from new plants.

The US subsidizes the disposal of nuclear materials so the cost of nuclear energy is not the cost to generate but the total cost including 250,000 years of safe storage. That makes nuclear very expensive and a tax burden.

Radioactive wastes are a challenge. But burdening future generations with nuclear wastes in deep shafts [in Nevada] is probably more reasonable than burdening them with a warmer world in which Manhattan is submerged under 20 feet of water.

How can he say that nuclear poison is better than a raising sea level ? Is it laziness to not care about the seriousness and difficult of nuclear waste storage or is Nevada far enough to not care?

A NYTimes columnist thinks it's okay to poision somewhere else outwest. Well Ohio thinks the smog they generate isn't too much a price to pay for OH energy but that smog blows to NY. Kristoff isn't "Green" he's NotInMyBackYard.

BTW if we stopped all carbon fule combustion today, the sea levels are going to rise anyway.
shoes
Nick is nuts. We're going to have sea level rise so
Nick, here's some footwear and
stop being a NIMBY-Green.

Conserving liberalism

bobo
I am an intellectual, not a
'highly educated and
secular university town elite
who follows Howard Dean and
believes Bush hatred and
stridency are
the outward signs of righteousness
'

The rejection of the conservative agenda means we the people are conservative. We are conserving the programs and policies established and advocated by liberals, hence we're actually not defending liberal or progressive policies, but functioning conservatives.
BoBo says:
It's become increasingly clear that the Republicans are bumping into some limits.
...
Then there's the lavish public spending, which offends the conservative sensibility. Then there is the talk of going to the nuclear option on judges' confirmations, which smacks of the radical confrontationalism that led to last decade's government shutdown. All in all, intellectual conservatism is bumping up against dispositional conservatism.
...
This does not mean good news for Democrats. That party is at risk of going into a death spiral. The Democrats lost white working class voters by 23 percentage points in the last election, and now the party is being led by people who are guaranteed to alienate those voters even more: the highly educated and secular university town elites who follow Howard Dean and believe Bush hatred and stridency are the outward signs of righteousness.
What a gem. The strident GOP Congress and White House alienated the US public when they used poor Terri Schiavo and a phony self-righteousness too raise money and rally their political base. They fostered hate against her husband for supporting her wishes and state and federal judges for not ruling their way. The continue to use Gay Hating as a primary tool to win local elections and yet Bobo says it's the Democrats who strident and hateful and the Democrats who are alienating the American people.

And is there any difference between highly educated and intellectual? Maybe highly educated people have college degrees whereas an intellectual is a self anointed "thinker" unencumbered by reality.

Lastly, why do working class white votes count more than non-white or non-working class? They don't and BoBo (and the GOP) should stop playing the race card. Quit while you're ahead because this working-class demographic is a shirking fraction of the USA population.

The petty little men who run the White House snub James Carter

pope and jimmy
First US President to invite Pope to White House is
uninvited to the Pope's funeral by current President

The petty little men who run the White House snub James Carter
He was the only president ever to host a pope at the White House when John Paul II came to visit a quarter-century ago, and in many ways Jimmy Carter had a powerful spiritual and philosophical affinity for the Polish pontiff. But when the pope is buried at the Vatican this morning, three living U.S. presidents will be in attendance and Carter will not.

The reason has touched off a classic Washington imbroglio fueled by suspicion, animosity and distrust, one that has reopened a rift between the camps of the former president and the current one. When Carter was left off the delegation list assembled by President Bush's White House, Democrats assumed he was snubbed. The Bush team is angry at what it considers an unfair smear.

The truth is a little harder to sort out. Both sides agree that the White House invited Carter and that he ultimately chose not to go, but questions immediately arose as to whether he was genuinely welcome or subtly discouraged from joining the entourage. Both sides have officially denied any dispute and issued instructions to their various surrogates not to discuss the matter publicly to avoid prolonging what has turned into a messy sideshow to a solemn event.
Is this a misunderstanding? Try modus operandi.

There are only four living former presidents. Can't a plain spoken man, God fearing Christian President just ring up Carter on the phone and have cleared this up in a minute?

The Carter snub is intentional. These guys play politics with everything. They are playing politics with Carter going to the Pope's funeral. If you aren't with them, and Carter opposed the Iraq War, then you're punished. This is punishment. Stupid, counter-productive and vindictive. Carter's a real Christian and he'll turn the cheek to protect his Nations Honor but the White House is operating on purely political ground.

The snub isn't subtle as was suggested in the WaPo article. It's a petty act but a very visible act that shows how non representative this regime has become, They feel it politically necessary to exclude a former President from such a symbolic meeting.

The price of crude set another record Friday, closing at $57.27 per barrel.

If oil prices remain high, however, consumers eventually will bear the burden.
ARM Mortgages and now petro is inflating the cost-of-business. The perfect storm, increased cost-of-living and rising interest rates.

For Sale Free For All

for sale
For Sale

The 2005 California housing market is scary.

This LA Times article maybe sensational but it isn’t that misleading. The market has clearly drawn in people who can’t afford to pay for their homes. They borrow money to borrow a home – they borrow to play in a rising market just to keep pace. Sit it out responsibly and you’re a loser – prices are increasing faster than a person can save for the down payment. They are not speculating, its survival. Recognize that a whole class of people is being priced out of home ownership - forever - and they’re desperately using the current “easy-money” driven market to grab something.

Sadly, it’s become a housing market rigged against the average Joe and Jane. Interest only loans can make sense for a family starting out and trying to get settled into a new home (new familes have one-time costs for furniture and etc.). There are interest deductions on taxes and spending/savings habits to change that could justify a short period of lesser payments. Interest only loans do not make sense when rates are expected to increase – better to lock in a minimum 5 to 10 year fixed loan and eat ramen noodle dinners.

In Doubt

2+2=5
In doubt, be for life and avoid what in practice and without euphemisms would represent a murder, to which it is impossible to be a passive observer without becoming an accomplice.
Vatican Cardinal Renato Martino
Who defines "In doubt"? The Lunatics claimed Terri Schiavo was talking to them, "waaaa" Doctors and courts all concluded she couldn't, didn't and never will regain conscience. The concepts "cannot "and "will not" do not go over well with fanatics. Fanatics witness miracles and defy the physical matter and logic as a matter of practicing their faith.

Schiavo III

taunt
They're gone but...

The fight goes on

It's looking more and more like an ugly family fight and not a bold stand on personal or moral principles.
The matter of burying Schiavo, though, is something her families have had to settle themselves. The Schindlers, who are devout Catholics, wanted their daughter's remains buried in Florida, where they live. Michael Schiavo, however, has custody of the body and plans to have his wife cremated.
Obviously the devout Catholics should prevail - the person or side that makes and demonstrates the most fanatical belief system should get preferential treatment. That way the GOP can foster and reward fanatical behavior (think Spoils System) and the US will march down a path of low-tax intolerance and invasive self-righteousness.

What's remarkable is how the media has exaggerated the size and significance in of this small crowed. Lucas pioneered the use of computers and compositing to take a few extras and turn them into a crowd. Robert Rodriguez used similar techniques with his Spy Kids movie series. MSNBC, CNN and FOX are also using innovative methods to trick the eye into believing there is a large crowd outside Shiavo's hospice. It's a hysterical, fanatical group, but not a crowd.

wookies
This is a crowd ....

The Uneven Even-Handed NYTimes

her

A Sympathetic Picture for a Kiss-Ass NYTimes Story.

NYTimes get's it wrong
It's difficult to understand how a position only 1 out of 5 people support is treated so mainstream and even handed. What is clearly a disaster for the GOP is called "A Collision of Disparate Forces May Be Reshaping U.S. Law".
But her [Terri] legacy may be that she brought an intense dimension - the issue of death and dying - to the battle over what President Bush calls "the culture of life."
1 of 5 people agreed with Delay/Bush/Santorum. This is the moment when people see lunacy has taken over the GOP.
The case also fueled conservatives' anger over what they regarded as a runaway judiciary, laying the groundwork for future fights over Mr. Bush's judicial nominees.

"It shows just how much power the courts have usurped from the legislative and executive branches," Mr. Perkins said, "that they now hold within their hands the power of life and death."
These runaway judges are conservative, GOP appointed judges. That fact goes unreported.

This is clearly a watershed moment for less than 20% of the US population but you wouldn't know. The polls and mainstream reaction to this freakshow is underrepresented and underreported.

This fanatical minority is bullying the press into even-handed reporting of a lop-sided event. The unevenness of this even-handed press coverage is irrelevant. The "culture of life" will destroy the GOP - it is a phony name for the politics of fanatical bigots.

The real, unreported problem for the GOP is that the next high profile judicial nomination *has* to be a favorite of these lunatics. Eventually, the GOP has to excise them - it will be an ugly
fight.
